As prominent figures are ousted left and right for alleged sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct, one of the first things people seem to expect is a statement from the accused’s friends and former colleagues. Did they know about the alleged misconduct? If so, have they enabled it in any way? Why did they continue to work with the accused if they knew about the allegations? In the case of Matt Lauer, who was fired from NBC News at the end of November for alleged “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace,” viewers have been clamoring for reactions from his female ex-colleagues, namely Ann Curry and now Katie Couric.
Couric, who cohosted the Today show on NBC with Lauer until she left in 2006, once said in a Watch What Happens Live segment that her former colleague “pinches me on the ass a lot.” Since Lauer’s firing, however, she has remained silent on the allegations that incited NBC’s decision. Last Friday, however, she addressed the issue for the very first time — in response to a comment left on her Instagram.
On an Instagram Couric posted of herself and her daughter, an Instagram user commented, “Nothing to say on Matt?? Huh– y’all would have been all over the story years ago. I watched y’all for YEARS. My childhood. Just goes to show you really can’t trust people. He interviewed people on their moral character and had none himself. #disgusting #doublelife #hypocrite #sickening I want time back I spent watching!!!!! 😢 and you have nothing to say. Crickets. People hear you loud and clear though.” While the user appears to have since deleted the comment, People captured it in a screenshot.
In reply, Couric wrote, “It’s incredibly upsetting and I will say something when I’m ready to. Thanks for your interest.”
It makes sense for viewers to seek comments from Lauer’s former colleagues about his alleged behavior, but they’re not accountable for whatever he did or didn’t do. The responsibility for his actions lies squarely on his shoulders.
